If you are crossing West 43rd Street at 9th Avenue, coming home to the Plaza, and you wait for the walk sign, beware: the cars have the right to turn even though the walk sign is on. And racing vehicles on West 43rd, our neighborhood street, making up for lost time as they cross 9th Avenue traffic, now have a straight-away to speed on, are dangerous. The ingenious split-phase signal light crossing 9th Avenue at 43rd Street is safe for walkers when the vehicles obey the law, but where's the enforcement when cars violate the red turn arrow and do not yield to pedestrians in the yellow turn arrow at the end of the phase? And trying to cross W43rd/10th or W44/10th, with traffic turning during the walk phase, is sometimes taking your life in your hands, or in the hands on a steering wheel. And have you tried to cross W42 at Dyer Ave lately, in front of the parking garage? Most times--impossible! If you are tired of this kind of driving behavior and fear for your family and friends, it's time to speak out and seek solutions. The traffic nightmare around Manhattan Plaza got a chance for a solution at the October 19th Community Board 4 Transportation and Planning Committee when five of our tenants showed up to complain about fast vehicles, illegal turns and violations of pedestrian right of way while crossing our neighborhood streets. Douglas and Jean even had a power point presentation to highlight the details. The CB4 Trannportation Committee will write a strong letter expressing the citizen complaint to The NY Department of Transportation recommending a speed bump on W43rd Street, between 9th and 10th Avenues, or a mid-block crossing, lead-time pedestrian intervals and phase signaling on West 42nd and West 43rd Streets onto 10th Avenue plus stronger enforcement and notification to out-of-town drivers that there is "no right turn on red" in our city. And, a top official of NYCDOT (Colleen Chattergoon) was at the meeting to hear the complaint and offer suggestions. Bravo MPTA for the motion, passed unanimously, and the attendees that showed at CB4 T&P Committee to make our streets safer.
Martin Treat, 2nd Vice President, MPTA Executive Committee
MPTA's Free Book, CD, DVD Exchange a Success
The MPTA's October 16th, 2016 book/magazine/DVD/VHS/CD Free Exchange in the Ellington Room was a triumph. An avalanche of donations came through the room. Delightfully, hundreds and hundreds of items found new homes. We were especially pleased to have many children visit. All of our children’s books and children’s DVDs/VHSs found kids to love them. With assistance from committee members, most of the remaining books were donated to non-profit organizations like Housing Works.
We learned a lot on Sunday and promise to make our Free Exchange even better next time. As this issue goes to press, we have a request in with management to hold our next Exchange soon after the holidays on Sunday, January 22nd or 29th, 2017. We will keep you posted. Stay tuned!
Thank you for helping us make the first Exchange a positive experience. If you have helpful suggestions on organizations who take book donations and if you are interested in assisting next time around, please contact us via the MPTA email address at: email@example.com, attention Julie Ridge, Committee Chairperson.
